If you want to lose weight without dieting,
you’ll need to learn how not to eat when you feel the urge.

I’m sitting at my dining room table working.
It’s 12.24am and I really want to be in bed with my husband.
I want to be asleep.
My bed is so soft and comfortable and inviting.
But it’s such a busy time of year,
And sometimes I work at night when everyone is asleep
To take care of my clients and students,
And finish creating what I want to create

Through the doorway, within my sightline, is the kitchen.
Newly renovated, sleek and sparkly,
Filled with lots of delicious food for my upcoming Jewish Holiday
(you know we Jews are all about celebrating with food, right?).

Thing is, my body isn’t hungry.
My stomach has that settled, just enough feeling.
I can feel my soup from dinner still digesting, and still filling me.

But my mind…
Aah. Another story altogether.
My mind keeps glancing over at the kitchen.
Beautiful flowers sit on the new island
(my wonderful father always buys me flowers before Jewish holidays)
next to fresh cookies and blintzes (cheese filled crepe deliciousness).
Which are not for tonight, or this early morning.

So I’m just watching myself
Watch the kitchen.

I’m letting it be.
I’m not trying to convince myself that I don’t need anything.
I’m not fighting the desire to procrastinate with food.
I’m not even negotiating some fruit or a healthy snack.

I’m just watching.

Noticing.

And working.

This is one of the most powerful ways I know to avoid overeating.
You can do it too – it doesn’t require any great skill,
and it becomes easier the more you do it.
You just become your own Compassionate and Dispassionate Witness.
It’s as if you’re hovering very slightly above yourself,
Bearing witness to both your inner and outer behaviour.

And simply bringing your Witness to bear
Means you are completely present with yourself
Which means you aren’t going to eat
Because you aren’t hungry.
And, if you’re like me, you rarely overeat when you’re watching yourself.

I find that if I try to fight the urge to overeat,
I eventually lose.
I just don’t have that much fight in me.
I want to live peacefully with myself
And I don’t want to worry about how to lose weight
without dieting anymore.

So if you’re also tired of trying to fight yourself thin,
Just try becoming your own Compassionate and Dispassionate Witness.
Just watch.
Don’t judge.
And keep doing whatever it is you want to overeat to avoid doing.
The urge will pass.

It’s 12.47 right now, and I’m smiling.
I’ve almost finished this blog
And the snacks on the island are intact.
I don’t even want them anymore.
Because what I was trying to avoid doing is done.
And I stayed with and true to myself.
Which is all it took.
I feel so satisfied, in a way that food can never satisfy me.

If I look closely, I see that even my Dispassionate Witness has a small grin 🙂
